There’s a lot of sludge from the social media Zeitgeist floating through my head. I’ve been making an effort to watch more Australian news. The inertia forced on all of us from quarantine is provoking the question; “when is this lockdown going to end?” With the camps consisting of “we need people to work so the economy doesn’t crash” , & “We need to ensure we flatten the curve so shut the fuck up & stay inside until the experts say it’s safe.”
Now that we’ve been clearly divided into “essential” & “non-essential”, a glimpse of what our society truly values is now nakedly obvious.
The most obvious of all of these is medical professionals, which are now being praised as heroes of our time. Maning the barricade against the cold touch of death. Tireless & relentless, slowly pushing inch by inch closer to the sensibilities of our culture which unconsciously presumes that death is a mere illusion, or a distant far off future. Death’s inertia has touched us all in some form the last few months, either in the form of biological death or in the form of deaths within the psyche. People long for the mediocrity of our affluent society & the comfortable illusion it offered.
But It really was an illusion because for over ten years now, we have been doubling down on the house of cards that caused the GFC in 2008. Australia opened up it’s property market to the boomer’s of China, inflating the housing market exponentially. Leaving soon to be two generations unable to afford a house that isn’t on the back of farmland without the help of another person. Generating fake wealth, to fund more hideous apartment buildings. instead of using our minerals to make technology here, Australia sold it for cash. & what did we all use that cash for? Buying American, Chinese, Japanese & Korean technology that we are now dependant on these technologies, without being easily able to create or replace any of it ourselves on a scale needed for the country.
Our best minds moved to Silicon Valley & Beijing, leaving a ruling class of narcissistic creationists, sociopathic Nihilists & air headed “woke” inquisitors arguing over the scraps of the society their destroying.
There is absolutely no way that this situation will be over in a matter of weeks. Grapple starkly with this reality. Most of us may be able to avoid the disease, but will Italy become a failed state? Will China continue to be able to export at the same rate? On the 7th of March Chinese exports had dropped by 17%.
I need to digress to address the constant deflections, denials, & defensive mechanisms that I have heard throughout my entire life whenever I try to get “deep.” I am tired of trying to take the problems of the world seriously, & be dismissed by dead end conversation stoppers like “how do you even know what’s real?” “well what could we do about it anyway?”, or that I just need to “ride the wave man.” These are more meant to be read as tones than as literal, escapism disguised as hedonism.
I resent being told I don’t know how the world works, when a perfectly fine stadium is completely demolished only to be rebuilt in the exact same spot. Then being told that it’s going to create five thousand jobs. It’s like hiring people to dig their own graves, fill them up & dig them again.
Just because you have a job, doesn’t mean it’s a useful one by default. Tough truth to hear but it’s true. The inverse is true as well. Just because you aren’t paid for what you’re doing, doesn’t mean it’s not work.
